The variegated euphorbia, also known as Arnie, is a gorgeous houseplant that can add instant impact to your home. It has beautiful leaves that are variegated with shades of green and white, which makes it stand out from other plants. However, like all plants, it requires proper care and attention to thrive. In this article, we will be discussing how to care for a variegated euphorbia and ensure that it remains healthy and beautiful. Let’s go:

About variegated euphorbia

The euphorbia looks like a quintessential cactus, although it’s technically not one (it grows very very tiny leaves, which cacti do not). It’s native to Southern Africa, where it stands out in the dry scrublands, basking in the blazing sun. As it grows, sometimes almost ten metres tall, its trunk becomes woody. Variegated euphorbias have a distinct pale colour and if you look closely you’ll spot a light marbled pattern.

How much light does my variegated euphorbia need?

Your variegated euphorbia plant needs bright light to thrive. Give it plenty of sunlight to soak up. If you notice that your plant's tiny leaves are turning yellow or brown, it may be a sign that it's receiving too much sunlight. Move it to a location with less intense light.

How often should I water my variegated euphorbia?

Water your variegated euphorbia plant when the soil is completely dry. It’s a desert plant, so overwatering can lead to root rot, which is a common problem with euphorbia plants. Make sure that the nursery pot has drainage holes to stop water from accumulating at the bottom of the pot. During the winter months, reduce how often you water as the plant's growth slows down.

Should I fertilise my variegated euphorbia?

Feed your variegated euphorbia with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every month during the growing season, which is from spring to summer. Dilute the fertiliser to half the recommended strength to prevent burning the plant's roots. Don’t feed your plant during the winter months when it's in its dormant phase.

Should I prune my variegated euphorbia?

Remove any yellow or brown leaves as they can indicate an underlying problem. Use sharp, clean scissors to cut off the stems just above a leaf node.

Common variegated euphorbia pests and diseases

Variegated euphorbia plants can be susceptible to common houseplant pests like mealybugs and spider mites. Check your plant regularly for any signs of infestation, like white, cottony patches on the leaves or webbing. Treat any infestations immediately with an insecticidal soap and weekly until the pests have gone.

The variegated euphorbia is an easy-to-care-for houseplant that can add a touch of ghostly glamour to your home.
