The fishbone cactus (selenicereus anthonyanus) is an exotic, vining cactus native to Mexico. It’s known for its long, jointed stems that resemble the bones of a fish. This species is also known as zig-zag cactus or fishbone prayer plant, but we call ours Kate.

Fishbone cacti are easy to care for, and make a great addition to any cactus collection. With its unique shape and vibrant colour, it can really brighten up a room. Here's how to keep yours happy:

About fishbone cacti

In the right conditions the fishbone cactus is a fast grower and its tendrils will grow as long as you let them. If it’s very happy, it should flower in autumn, producing beautiful, heavily scented blossoms. Those flowers only come out after dark and live for just one night, which is quite fantastically romantic and dramatic of them. In the wild it grows edible fruit, which tastes a bit like kiwi fruit. The chances of one fruiting outside the jungle are very slim, but you never know.
